The Sacramento City Council on Aug. 26 approved an ordinance adding the New Helvetia Historic District and 12 other properties once owned by prominent African Africans to the city’s Register of Historic and Cultural Resources. The council also adopted a historic district plan to guide preservation and future development.

The historic district plan provides the framework for balancing preservation with growth. It calls for restoration of historically significant buildings while allowing compatible new development – setting standards for height, design, and materials to maintain the neighborhood’s character. The properties can thus be remodelled while preserving their original character.
