Police arrested 22 people on suspicion of driving under the influence during a DUI checkpoint in Fresno on Saturday, authorities said.

The checkpoint was held at Clovis and Lamona avenues from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., where officers also cited 13 drivers for operating a vehicle without a license or with a suspended or revoked license.

A total of 541 vehicles were contacted, police said.

Officials said checkpoint locations are chosen based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, with the primary goal of promoting public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

The next DUI enforcement operation, a saturation patrol, is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13.
