LONDON − Prince William and Princess Kate led royal tributes marking the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's death on Sept. 8.
Elizabeth, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, died aged 96 on Sept. 8, 2022, at Balmoral Castle, her Scottish summer retreat. To commemorate her passing, William and Kate paid a visit to the Women's Institute (WI), an organisation close to the late queen's heart. The royal pair appeared at their local WI branch, near their home in Windsor, amid rumors of a move.
Kate was pictured at the commemoration sporting her signature brown locks, a switch from her recent honey blonde do earlier this month.
Queen Elizabeth was a WI member for 80 years, and president of the branch near her Sandringham home in eastern England from 2003 until her death.
Elsewhere, William's estranged brother, Prince Harry, made a much-anticipated return to the UK, paying respects to his grandmother at her final resting place.
Shortly after arriving from his newfound home in California, Harry visited St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, less than 10 miles away from William and Kate, to lay flowers where the late queen was buried alongside her husband, Prince Philip.
Despite their proximity, Harry, whose rift with his family has been well-documented, is not expected to see William during his visit to Britain this week. There is, however, speculation that he might meet with his father, King Charles, for the first time in 20 months.
Charles is currently staying at Balmoral with his wife, Queen Camilla, and has no plans to publicly mark the anniversary of his mother's death. The king and queen attended the nearby Crathie Kirk church on Sunday, Sept. 7, where prayers were said to mark Accession Day and for the Duchess of Kent, wife of the late queen's cousin, who died last Thursday, Sept. 4, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.
The royal family's X account posted a picture of the late monarch with the message "Remembering Queen Elizabeth II, 1926-2022."
