Removing a stop sign is no joke and could cost lives, the Ontario Provincial Police are warning after a damaged sign was found knocked onto a rural road.

Officers were called at about 4:45 a.m. on Saturday to the intersection of Norwich Road and Oxford Road 13, in Norwich Township, where the damaged stop sign was located, Oxford OPP said.

A passerby spotted the hazard and contacted police immediately.

It’s unclear if the sign was removed in a collision or through mischief, according to police.

They reminded drivers that collisions damaging private, municipal or highway property – including signs – must be reported immediately.
