AKWESASNE, N.Y. (ABC22/FOX44) - The North Country's only federally recognized Native American reservation has reached an agreement with the state of New York under which disputed land will be returned to the reservation, officials announced Friday.
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council, the government of the reservation at Akwesasne, New York, said that the settlement was not perfect, "as it does not restore all Mohawk lands that we historically lost." However, they nevertheless praised the agreement as an important accomplishment.
The settlement returns over 12,000 acres of land in Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties to the tribe, and establishes a process for the Akwesasronon people to acquire more land given conditions.
