Emergency services have responded to a serious incident in Merseyside, where a person has reportedly fallen 30 feet into an empty silo. The incident occurred this evening on Woodend Avenue, near the junction with Speke Boulevard.
Paramedics and fire crews were seen at the scene, focusing their efforts on a unit behind Dugdale Nutrition. Police were also present inside the industrial unit on the second floor. As a precaution, a section of Speke Boulevard was closed off to facilitate the rescue operation.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the details in a statement. They reported that crews were alerted to the incident at 7.08pm and arrived on the scene just five minutes later, deploying two fire engines along with the search and rescue team.
"Crews arrived to find a casualty had fallen approximately thirty feet into an empty silo," the statement read. The search and rescue team is working to establish a rope system to lower a member of the North West Ambulance Service's Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) into the silo through an access hatch. This team member will be equipped with breathing apparatus to assess the condition of the casualty.
Gas readings taken at the site have indicated normal levels, which is a positive sign for the safety of the rescue operation. Meanwhile, Merseyside Police are managing an outer cordon around the premises to ensure the area remains secure as the incident unfolds. The situation is ongoing, and further updates are expected as emergency services continue their work.
