Honolulu police have arrested a 43-year-old man on kidnapping charges after he allegedly choked and then prevented his girlfriend from leaving their residence in Waikiki.

Police said the incident happened Sunday at about 11 a.m.

According to a police bulletin, the man and his 36-year-old girlfriend were involved in a verbal argument at their residence.

When the argument escalated, the suspect allegedly choked the victim, restricting her ability to breathe. He would not let her leave, despite several attempts.

Upon eventually being able to get out, she went to the lobby and called 911.

Responding officers arrested the suspect without incident. He remains in custody, pending the investigation.
