A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was severely injured in a crash with a Tesla sedan on southbound Interstate Highway 280 on the Peninsula on Monday, authorities said.

The crash happened just south of the Alpine Road exit near Portola Valley at about 1:40 p.m.

The CHP said a report of a leaf blower on the roadway prompted the officer to respond to the location and initiate a traffic break. While conducting the traffic break with emergency lights flashing, a 2026 Tesla Model Y failed to yield to the officer and collided with the motorcycle, the CHP said.

The officer was ejected from the motorcycle and sustained major injuries that were not life-threatening, the CHP said. The officer, who was not identified, was being treated at a local hospital.
