The passenger of a car that fled a traffic stop in Houma Monday afternoon was shot and killed by a Louisiana State Police trooper during the chase, authorities said.

State Police said the trooper chased after the car when the driver did not comply with an attempted traffic stop. When the driver stopped at a dead end on Lake Long Drive, the passenger got out of the car and the trooper opened fire, State Police said.

The passenger was declared dead on scene.

The trooper chased after the car again as the driver sped off, a pursuit that State Police said ultimately ended in a crash on La. Highway 1 near Lefort Bypass Road, where the driver was arrested.

State Police detectives are leading the investigation into the shooting, which was reported just before 4 p.m.
