MADISON (WKOW) — More construction workers die from overdoses and suicide each year than from work-related accidents, according to the Center for Construction Research and Training .

Factors in construction that can contribute to poor mental health include long hours, time away from family and job insecurity. In addition, job-related pain and injury can lead people to rely on substances, which can lead to overdose.

According to Alex Ylvisaker, the corporate safety director for construction company JP Cullen, people in the industry often feel they cannot be open about their struggles.

"It's okay to not be okay. There's sometimes a macho, tough guy persona in construction, and everybody deals with something," said Ylvisaker.
