“Identifiable flying objects will be seen in the air over Waverly the evening of September 11,” opens a front-page story in the Sept. 9, 1975, issue of the Bremer County Independent. “The objects will be paper plates dropped from a low flying airplane.”
The paper plates had “gifts, or discounts on merchandise, offered by the member retail merchants of the Waverly Chamber of Commerce” as a unique way to offer shoppers bargain shopping.
“The plates will be dropped from an airplane over the various residential areas of Waverly. […] Each plate will list items from a particular member’s store, and will state the time period that the offer will be valid.”
