A Hey Hey It’s Saturday star has revealed he has been diagnosed with the same cancer as John Blackman and John Farnham following a routine dental check.

Wilbur Wilde revealed on Monday he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma.

The 69-year-old played the saxophone in Hey Hey It’s Saturday's house band from 1984 until 1999, and again from 2009 to 2010.

Wilde proceeded to have part of his tongue and mouth removed.

“It was a shock,” he told the Herald Sun.

“I can't say I was scared... I just try to deal with things on their merits and not coping was not an option for me.

“I have not been cavalier about this. I have gotten on with my life, but I have taken it very seriously and I have had great advice along the way from people whose opinions I have great respect for.”
