Two local community colleges have opened defense of their state championships.

Mesa College last year swept both the men’s and women’s titles in the California Community College cross-country championships.

Last Saturday, both Olympians teams placed third in the Crush Invitational at Fresno.

In the women’s division, Jazzlyn Islas finished second in the five-kilometer race with a time of 18 minutes, 44.3 seconds. Suhey Arce (Grossmont High School) finished fourth in 18:47.8. Luciano Roberts was third among the individual finishers in the four-mile race with a time of 20:49.7.

And Cuyamaca College is 2-0-1 after three matches in defense of the Coyotes’ first state championship in men’s soccer. Sophomore Diego Esquivel scored the only goal last week as the Coyotes defeated Santa Ana 1-0.
