WILDWOOD — Officials here have approved $3.3 million in tax breaks for construction of a $50 million apartment and retail complex meant to bring new activity downtown that some opponents had argued wasn't worth the cost.

The Wildwood City Council voted 9-6 Monday to approve the incentives for a four-story, 188-unit multifamily luxury apartment building, with public pickleball courts and 7,000 square feet of space for stores or restaurants, to be built on vacant land at the southwest corner of Main Street and Taylor Road. The project would be named Wildwood Luxury Living.

Backers of the project said it will jump-start growth in the city's Town Center, which struggled to keep businesses open and has been slow to draw development since it was planned 30 years ago as the town’s high-density
