WATERBURY, CT. (WFSB) - The city of Waterbury is cracking down on motels, specifically ones that rent rooms by the hour.
City leaders passed a plan Monday night that is aimed at tackling crime. Some say that is taking place at some of the businesses.
“No one is renting a room for an hour. There’s no traveling salesman. It’s not the 1950s. Wake up. They are trafficking women, they are doing crack, they’re selling drugs,” said Douglas Livingston, a Waterbury resident.
“It’s easy way to move a human trafficking victims from one place to another anonymously,” said Amanda Nardozzi, Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury.
The Board of Aldermen passed the ordinance, which was proposed by Mayor Paul Pernerewski. It prohibits hotels and motels from renting for less than 12 hours.
