POWELL, Ohio — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is celebrating the birth of a baby bonobo, marking the 18th born at the facility.
The male bonobo was born on Aug. 11 to Kibibi, a first-time mother. Kibibi is the daughter of Kimia, who was born at the zoo in 1997, and the granddaughter of Susie and Jimmy, two longtime bonobos still living at the zoo. That makes the new arrival the great-grandson of Susie and Jimmy.
Zoo officials said both Kibibi and her son are healthy and doing well.
While Kibibi initially needed time to adjust to motherhood, the zoo said she is now "showing wonderful care and attentiveness to her son."
