NEDERLAND, Texas — The Nederland City Council has postponed taking action on hiring a new city manager as officials await the completion of a background check on the leading candidate.

Mayor Jeff Darby said the city’s human resources department is still finalizing the report. “The background report that our HR department is preparing for is not yet complete,” Darby said. “The HR director said it is about 90% complete, but until it is complete, they will not release it.”

Darby emphasized that the search for the city’s next top administrator is a careful process. He said he does not take the responsibility lightly.

The position has been vacant since April 30, when former City Manager Chris Duque resigned.

The council did not set a new date for a vote.
