Like many veterans , Tim Hancock has experienced his own mental health journey.
"Just by serving, there is a relative amount of trauma," he said.
"It's a very stressful environment, you're removed from family ... put in very, very stressful situations."
The veteran served for 14 years in the military as a transport driver and then as a nursing officer.
He enlisted straight out of college and said the stress experienced while in uniform was "relatively well managed".
The Launceston resident said the problems generally arise when an individual's service is ended for reasons outside their control.
Mr Hancock was medically discharged. But he said he was fortunate.
