The Allegheny County property assessment and taxation system continues to be a slow-motion disaster. Only County Executive Sara Innamorato can stop the situation from degrading further, by finally following through on her campaign pledge to call a countywide reassessment.

Last week, the deadline for appeals for the coming tax year passed, with about 6,000 filed. Hearings on these appeals, many of which will involve further reductions in the value of commercial properties, began this Monday. The results of these cases will continue to erode the tax bases of every municipality and school district in Allegheny County.
