LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The organization Protect Our Schools KY is pushing for better funding from the Kentucky General Assembly for public schools amidst years of teacher shortages, resources that are spread thin, and inflation.

“As superintendent, I see every day the gap between what our students deserve and what we are able to afford to provide,” said Dr. Carrie Ballinger, the Rockcastle County Public Schools superintendent.

The coalition comprises district superintendents, educators, parents and students who are asking lawmakers to include $718 million in new funding toward Kentucky’s public schools.

Dr. Ballinger said the current level of funding has lost value when adjusted for inflation.

“In 2019, Rockcastle County schools could purchase a school bus for $94,000,” she said. “Today,
