NEW YORK (WABC) -- Zohran Mamdani nearly doubles Andrew Cuomo's lead in the mayoral race's first independent poll in the general election.

In the current four way race - Mamdani has 46% of likely voters, compared to Cuomo 24%, Sliwa 15% and mayor Adams 9%.

But in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup, it becomes "an extremely tight race" -- Mamdani 48% to Cuomo's 44%.

The Times/Siena College poll underscores the potential impact of shrinking the field, which has been advocated by Cuomo supporters.

Doing so, it suggested, could meaningfully erode Mamdani's lead, but only if both the current mayor and Sliwa - who have vowed to keep running - suspended their campaigns.
