SAGINAW, MI — An acre of Saginaw history is back in the possession of the city.

The Saginaw City Council approved a $20,000 purchase agreement to acquire about 1-acre of the 52-acre former Saginaw County fairgrounds property, which has spent much of this century as a vacant eyesore.

The 8-0 vote came during the council’s Monday, Sept. 8, meeting, weeks after city officials first announced plans to transform the 1-acre section of the old fairgrounds into a public park.

The Saginaw Housing Commission, which has owned the old fairgrounds for more than two decades, will retain ownership of the rest of the site. Saginaw officials said they hope to attract interest from private developers to purchase and repurpose the remaining 51 acres of land.
