Nepal’s prime minister has resigned following violent protests against a ban on social media and government corruption.

Khadga Prasad Oli said he is stepping down immediately.

Protesters set fire to the homes of some of the country's top political leaders in opposition to a social media ban that was lifted on Tuesday.

While the mass protest and attack on parliament began as opposition to the social media ban, they were also fuelled by growing frustration and dissatisfaction with the government.

Police opened fire during the protest and 19 people were killed.
