In recent years, scientists have discovered something strange: When mice with Alzheimer's disease inhale menthol, their cognitive abilities improve.

The chemical compound seems to protect the brain from some of the damage typically associated with the disease.

A study published in April 2023 suggests that specific smells could one day be used as therapies for Alzheimer's. If scientists can learn which odors trigger which brain and immune responses, they may be able to harness them to improve health.

In particular, the researchers noticed a reduction in interleukin-1-beta (IL-1β), a protein that helps to regulate the body's inflammatory response. While this response can be protective, it leads to harm when it's not properly controlled.
