INDIANOLA — Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Steen said Iowa must move toward eliminating property taxes, but he cautioned that doing so immediately if he’s elected would be “irresponsible.”
“I will have to sign a balanced budget each year,” he told Warren County Republicans at a Monday, Sept. 8 campaign stop. “If we eliminate property tax, we'll have to plus up the budget from another source. The governor can't deficit spend, and I will never defund the police, firefighters, first responders or our schools.”
He told reporters after the event that he wants to move the state toward reducing or eliminating property taxes, but “it's got to be responsible.”
