CAIRO, Ill. (WSIL) — For generations, images of beauty in magazines, films, and advertisements have often left women of color standing on the margins. But one upcoming event in Cairo is aiming to change that narrative, one story at a time.

That fight for recognition, resilience, and redefinition takes center stage in Cairo this fall.

On Monday, October 6, 2025, at 6 p.m., the Cairo Public Library will host artist and speaker, Karen Anderson, for her presentation, “More Than Color: The Marginalization of African Beauty Through History.”

Anderson’s program traces how women of African descent have been portrayed in art, literature, history, and modern media, while lifting up the voices of those who dared to define beauty for themselves. Her goal, to inspire audiences to see beauty not thro
