CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- City of Carbondale Police Officers arrested a 15-year-old on September 8, accusing the teen of having a gun in his backpack.

Officers said they encountered the teenager in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane and saw part of a firearm protruding from his open backpack.

They then arrested the teenager without incident. Police said they recovered the gun and ammunition from the backpack.

The teenager was released to a family member and will appear in court for an aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charge.

Police encourage anyone with information about the incident to contact the department.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
