WINDHAM, Maine — A crow found dead in Windham has tested positive for West Nile virus, marking the latest confirmed case of the mosquito-borne disease in Cumberland County, according to state health officials.
A local epidemiologist with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Cumberland County team reported that the bird was discovered in an unspecified yard and subsequently tested positive for West Nile virus, the town of Windham said in a social media post .
Mosquitoes in Portland have already tested positive for the West Nile Virus this year. Four wild birds also tested positive for the virus this year in Kennebec, Sagadahoc, and York Counties.
Last year, the Maine CDC reported the first locally acquired case of West Nile Virus in a human since 2020.
