HOUSTON (KIAH) — On this day in 1900, the coastal city of Galveston, Texas, bore the brunt of a very powerful and devastating hurricane, resulting in the tragic loss of an estimated 8,000 lives.

This deadly event continues to be remembered as the deadliest natural disaster in the history of the United States, a stark reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature.

According to the Galveston History Center, it destroyed 2,636 houses and left thousands more damaged. The city's property losses were estimated at around $28-30 million.
