A Missoula city councilor stepped down from her position late last week to comply with state law after she filed for reelection in a different city council ward.
Jennifer Savage has represented Ward 1, which encompasses downtown, the Rattlesnake and Northside neighborhoods, since 2021.
This fall, she filed for city council in Ward 3 after her family moved into the ward. The Ward 3 councilor represents the University District and Slant Street neighborhoods.
Savage vacated her seat because state election laws require a candidate become an official resident of a specific ward at least 60 days before the election.
A city councilor also cannot represent a specific ward while residing outside of the ward, meaning Savage had to vacate the seat once she became an official reside
