FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Fairfield County deputies say teens in the area are being targeted by a sextortion scam.

Scammers use fake social media accounts to trick young people into sharing explicit pictures.

Once they have the pictures, deputies say the scammers demand money and threaten to send the pictures to the victim’s friends or family.

Gavin’s Law, passed in South Carolina in 2023, makes sextortion a felony.

Deputies say parents should openly talk with their kids about the risks of sharing pictures and personal information online.

And if someone does threaten you, do not pay them.

Instead, save the messages, block the account, and tell a parent or local law enforcement.
