Colorado State University officials did not respond to questions Sept. 8 about why some exit gates were locked in apparent violation of fire codes as a sellout crowd tried to leave Canvas Stadium following CSU’s first home football game of the season Sept. 6.

Only two of the six exit gates on the southeast side of the on-campus stadium were open in the first 10 minutes following the game, causing a backup of hundreds of fans who filled the large stairway from the concourse to ground level. Elderly and disabled people using the elevators just north of the stairway were forced to work their way through the crowd at the bottom to exit, as well.
