The United States, by far, has the highest number of guns per capita, with an estimated 120.5 civilian firearms per 100 people. This means there are more guns than people in the U.S.

There are an estimated 20 to 24.4 million AR-15 style rifles in civilian hands in the U.S. These semiautomatic assault rifles are used in most mass shootings like those used in Sandy Hook, Las Vegas, Parkland and the Buffalo Tops massacre.

Those opposed to a ban on assault weapons in the U.S., will often site mental illness as the cause of the mass shootings. All countries have people suffering with mental illness. The difference between the U.S. and other countries is the availability of guns and the ease of acquiring guns in the U.S.
