I’ve been following Duluth’s financial troubles with growing concern — and growing confusion. The city is facing a budget deficit large enough to require a backhoe to dig out of, and yet, somehow, we’re still settling union contracts like we’ve got a surplus tucked behind City Hall. It’s like remodeling your kitchen while the foreclosure notice is already taped to the door.

If the checkbook’s in the red, maybe we hit the brakes on promises until we find the money to keep them.
