A man in Missouri was charged with first-degree murder over the weekend after police said he fatally shot his roommate as the two were leaving for a college football watch party.

Marvin Byrd, 54, was charged with murder on Sunday, Sept. 7, as well as unlawful possession of a firearm by a dangerous felon, resisting or interfering with arrest for a felony and committing an armed criminal action, Missouri court records reviewed by USA TODAY show.

According to a probable cause statement from St. Louis police, Byrd and his roommate left their home to attend a small gathering to watch college football on Saturday, Sept. 6. Upon leaving, Byrd "became agitated" with his roommate over a lack of financial contribution to their home and "recreational drug expenses," the court document says.
