CHICAGO — A homeless encampment on the city's North Side was dismantled Tuesday morning.

The move in Legion Park, located at 3103 West Peterson Avenue, comes after several fires — including three over the summer.

The Chicago Park District was on scene at the park Tuesday with construction vehicles, tearing down the tent camps.

City officials say the wooded area along the river is difficult to reach, marking fires as an even more serious threat.

The people who were unhoused Tuesday will be allowed to set up tents in other areas of the park.

In a press release, the Department of Family Support Services (DFSS) said, in part:

Unless designated a restricted area, tent camping for unhoused individuals is currently being allowed in areas of Chicago Parks that are accessible to public safety
