NORTH PARK — Tears filled Tracey Alcoser’s eyes as she watched her two-story wooden home be torn down Tuesday morning.
Alcoser’s makeshift house on the banks of the North Shore Channel was one of several knocked down by city crews Tuesday as they cleared a Legion Park encampment. The Park District announced the encampment would be shut down after a July 28 fire drew attention to the encampment, which popped up about a year ago in the park between Bryn Mawr and Peterson avenues.
Protestors, many with the group Parks for All, also gathered at the encampment with signs. Initially, protestors and encampment residents stood near the makeshift homes, but police moved them further away and put up tape blocking off the area.
