SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — On Tuesday, Mayor Van Johnson denied claims that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids were happening in Savannah.
While addressing the Hyundai operation that apprehended 475 undocumented immigrants, Mayor Van Johnson denied claims that ICE was conducting raids in Savannah.
"It was talked that ICE were conducting raids here in Savannah," the mayor said. "To our knowledge, that's not true and it did not happen."
There were reports of ICE raids happening in Savannah earlier this year in partnership between ICE and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), where WSAV was told that these raids were meant to detain those involved in drug trafficking.
