ASHEBORO, N.C. — A man has been indicted by a Grand Jury of second-degree murder in the shooting death of a 23-year-old man in Asheboro on August 30.

According to the Asheboro Police Department, Branson Russell was formally indicted on Monday after it was presented with the facts of the case. Russell is being held without bond and is set to make his first court appearance on Wednesday.

The Asheboro Police Department said that on August 30, officers responded to reports of shots fired around 7 p.m. in the parking lot at 1418 E. Dixie Drive. When they arrived on scene, officers found 23-year-old Alexander Benitez-Hernandez suffering from a gunshot wound.

Benitez-Hernandez died at the scene despite life-saving measures from first responders.
