MADISON (WKOW) — The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) confirmed Tuesday that a 3-year-old Quarter Horse stallion in Grant County has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).
This is the state's first confirmed horse case of WNV in 2025.
Symptoms of WNV in horses can include fever, loss of coordination, and hind-end weakness. The disease can be fatal in 30-40% of horses showing signs, according to DATCP. The virus is transmitted through mosquito bites, not directly between humans and horses.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has confirmed five human cases of WNV in the state this year . These cases indicate the presence of infected mosquitoes capable of spreading the virus to both people and animals.
