A manufacturer of military vehicles is expanding its footprint in Michigan with a $31.7 million investment expected to create 450 new jobs.

The investment by American Rheinmetall will see the construction of a new headquarters in Auburn Hills, which will consolidate operations in Troy and Sterling Heights.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office said the investment will also expand the company’s engineering, prototyping and technical capabilities to support new U.S. Department of Defense contracts and drive production growth at American Rheinmetall’s facilities in Plymouth, Lapeer and Lansing.

Whitmer announced the investment Tuesday, Sept. 9, while abroad at Rheinmetall AG’s proving ground in Germany. American Rheinmetall is a subsidiary of the Germany-based company.
