LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Dr. Sue C. Carnell will serve as Michigan’s interim State Superintendent, the Department of Education announced Tuesday.
Carnell, a longtime educator, will be the first Black woman to hold the position.
She has served as the chief deputy superintendent since 2021. She’s taking over for Dr. Michael Rice when he retires on Oct. 3.
Last month, Dr. Glenn Maleyko was chosen to be the new full-time State Superintendent. The Board of Education is still negotiating his contract. A start date has not been finalized.
Dr. Carnell has been an educator for over 40 years.
