GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) — Repair work is well underway on US 441/Newfound Gap Road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park after heavy rain and rising stream levels led to a slide underneath part of the road last month.
GSMNP shared new photos of the construction on Tuesday, which required crews to place 120 tons of sandbags to temporarily divert a stream while construction occurred. The park shared that crews took out 144 truckloads of debris, or approximately 1,750 cubic yards of material, from the slide.
There has also been 2,000 tons of gravel fill and 152 boulders delivered. Crews are now working to add the fill and build a retaining wall with the boulders. • (Great Smoky Mountains National Park) • (Great Smoky Mountains National Park) • (Great Smoky Mountains National Par
