New Year’s Eve in Mobile will take a funky turn this year, organizers of the city’s annual MoonPie Drop announced Tuesday.

The headlining act at this year’s MoonPie Over Mobile celebration will be Morris Day & The Time, a Minneapolis band known for its fusion of funk, rock, R&B and other influences. Known for associations with Prince, the group appeared in his film “Purple Rain,” and scored a series of ‘80s hits including “The Bird,” “777-9311,” “Jungle Love” and “Jerk Out.”

Former city councilman Fred Richardson, whose support for a MoonPie-themed celebration and was the driving force in its establishment, appeared before the council to make the announcement. Also present were members of Events Mobile, the nonprofit entity that organizes the event.
