TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – County leaders are investigating a massive wastewater spill in Hillsborough County, enough to fill nearly 48 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

"Something happened out there, and it was bad, and it just shows the vulnerability of these biological treatment systems,” said George Cassady, Assistant County Administrator of Public Utilities.

Hillsborough County said a few days before Labor Day, someone could have dumped an industrial cleaning agent into their system, which caused 32 million gallons of wastewater to leak.

It happened at the Falkenburg Road Advanced Water Treatment Plant is located in Brandon.
