TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — Although the 2026 midterm election is over a year away, a showdown between top Republicans in the state and county is starting to come into focus.

In Florida, it is shaping up to be a battle between Trump-backed candidates and DeSantis-backed candidates.

"This is really going to be a report card of who's got the political will? Who's got the political allegiance and who's got the political favorability and popularity that's really speaking to Florida voters," political analyst Tara Newsom said.

The governor has hand-crafted a cabinet full of loyalists, and while he is backing both Attorney General James Uthmeier and Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia to run in 2026, many are wondering who his pick will be to take over the governor's mansion.
