BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Birmingham City Council on Tuesday approved $14 million in funding for the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA).

Council President Darrell O’Quinn said the community wants public transportation, with surveys consistently showing the public’s need, with 10% to 15% of city residents without access to private transportation.

“Public transportation in the city of Birmingham is a priority for residents,” O’Quinn said. “It’s the tool that bridges the gap for a lot of those people.”

Earlier this year, the BJCTA started rolling out its 70/30 plan. The plan uses a mix of fixed bus routes and microtransit to accommodate areas with low ridership.
