Donald Trump has condemned Israel's recent strike in Qatar, labelling it "unfortunate". The attack, which targeted Hamas leaders in Doha, resulted in the deaths of at least five members of the group. Trump stated that the strike "does not advance the goals of either Israel or America" and expressed concern over the implications for US-Qatar relations.
The Israeli military confirmed the operation, stating that it was part of ongoing efforts to counter Hamas. A spokesperson mentioned that Israel's defences were engaged in intercepting a retaliatory strike launched from Yemen in response to the attack. This incident occurred during a meeting in Doha, where Hamas leaders were reportedly discussing a peace deal proposed by Trump aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
In the aftermath of the strike, Qatar issued a strong condemnation, calling it a "criminal attack". The explosions were heard across Doha, with plumes of smoke rising above the city. Despite the attack, Hamas claimed that its leadership survived the assault.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich defended the operation, asserting that it demonstrated that "terrorists do not and will not have immunity" anywhere in the world. He described the strike as a "right decision" and praised the Israeli military for its execution of the operation.
Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun also condemned the attack, accusing Israel of attempting to destabilise the region. He stated that the strikes were part of a broader pattern of aggression that undermines stability and security in the Middle East.
Pope Leo XIV joined the chorus of criticism, calling the Israeli attack "really serious" and urging for an end to hostilities. He emphasised the need for continued efforts towards peace.
In a post on TruthSocial, Trump clarified that the decision for the strike was made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not by him. He expressed regret over the attack's location, highlighting Qatar's role as a close ally of the United States in peace negotiations.
Hamas officials responded by holding the US "jointly responsible" for the attack, citing its support for Israel. They vowed that such actions would not deter their resolve.
The Gulf states have also condemned the strike, with the United Arab Emirates calling it "cowardly" and Saudi Arabia labelling it as "brutal Israeli aggression". Qatar's foreign ministry described the attack as a "blatant violation" of international law, asserting that it would not tolerate such reckless behaviour that disrupts regional security.
