PIERSON, Iowa (KTIV) - Tanner Mackey of Pierson, IA is setting out to beat the Guinness World Record for the fastest 10k wearing a 20-pound vest.
Mackey started running with a weighted pack only a few years ago at a race to support a local charity for veterans in Pierson.
He says that event is what made him fall in love with running, and this idea came about one day while running.
“I was looking for other races and things around that I could go and compete in,” said Mackey, “and just decided, ‘Hey, let’s see what the world record is.’”
The current record according to the Guinness World Record book is 52 minutes and 17 seconds, and is held by an Egyptian runner who broke the record during a marathon in Dubai earlier this year.
Mackey will be running the 10k at this year’s Mighty Mo Run
