Former Iowa State All-American Festus Lagat ran the fifth-fastest time in history for the 1,000 meters
Festus Lagat and Spain's Mohamed Attaoui took a stab at breaking the world record in the 1,000 meters on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
Lagat, a former Iowa State All-American, and Attaoui instead jumped into the top 10 all-time in the race rarely contested outdoors. Attaoui clocked a winning time of 2 minutes, 12.25 seconds at Trier, Germany while Lagat, a Kenyan, finished in 2:12.96 in the six-person race. They lead off this edition of the WEEKEND UPDATE of the best performances by Iowa -based collegiate and postcollegiate distance runners and triathletes.
